1.  Assistant Caregiver

Primary Function :
to provide husbandry care for a colony of chimpanzees. To clean and sanitize chimpanzee housing areas, equipment and related areas. Prepare and  provide food to chimpanzees.
 
Job Description:
• Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Prepare and food for chimpanzees.
• Clean and sanitize rooms and equipment
• Remove and replace bedding if necessary
• Observe chimpanzee behavior and appearance.
• Report unusual behavior or injuries.
• Transport food, bedding or supplies from storage areas to animal areas.
• Maintain records of health, behavior, cleaning, etc.
• Prepare enrichment and training reinforcement for chimpanzees as directed.
• Participate in educational programs as directed.
• May assist behavioral or veterinary staff as directed.
• Ensure premises are secure
• Perform related duties as required.

Supervision:    None; reports directly to Colony Manger

Education & Experience:
•High school diploma or GED required.  Must be able to read and follow written and verbal instructions and write legibly and accurately.
•Some college preferred
•3 years animal related experience preferred.
•No prior animal experience required, but must have aptitude for the care and wellbeing of animals.
•This work will require bending, carrying, kneeling, lifting, listening, pulling, pushing, reading, speaking, squatting, standing, stooping, stretching, walking, watching and writing.  
•Must be able to routinely lift and carry 50 lbs for short distances.  
•Must be able to assist in lifting chimpanzees (up to 75 lbs.).  
•Duties may require driving Chimp Haven vehicles, and must have a valid driver’s license and meet Chimp Haven’s motor vehicle operating standards.  
•Work may involve considerable outdoor work in various weather conditions.  
•Potential exists for animal bites and scratches.  
•Potential exposure to unpleasant odors, animal wastes, animal tissues and body fluids, toxic chemicals, zoonotic diseases (tuberculosis, shigella etc.), infectious agents (Hepatitis B,C, HIV, etc.).
•Participation in a medical monitoring and surveillance program that includes hepatitis B and other inoculations is required.
•Safety training, equipment, clothing and supplies will be provided.

Hours:
Normal hours are 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM, occasionally working outside of regular hours.  May work shifts of 4:30 AM – 1:00 PM or schedule may be altered for operational purposes. Overtime, weekend, holiday, and night work may be required at times.

2. Veterinarian

Primary Function:
• to provide veterinary care for chimpanzee colony and, depending upon qualifications, to be the associate director of the sanctuary

Duties and Responsibilities:
• clinical medicine, preventive medicine, surgery, and necropsies
• maintaining records
• training staff to make health observations, assist with procedures and administer routine treatments
• clinical veterinarian will assist in assuring regulatory compliance
• Manages all aspects of the department
• Reports to Director and Board of Directors
• If appropriately experienced, the veterinarian would assume responsibilities as the Sanctuary’s Associate Director
• Knowledgeable about a variety of field’s concepts, practices and procedures
• Provide routine and emergency health care to chimpanzees
• Diagnose and treat diseases and injury
• Pan and implement preventive health programs
• Develop standard operating procedures
• Implement biosafety program
• Hire, train, and supervise veterinary technician(s)
• Analyze data and write up results for publications or presentations

Supervision and Responsibility:
• Manages all aspects of the department
• Reports to Director and Board of Directors
• If appropriately experienced, the veterinarian would assume responsibilities as the Sanctuary’s Associate Director
• Assoc. Director’s duties include: assisting with directing the entire animal care program, a large federal contract, the physical plant maintenance, regulatory compliance, the OHS program, as well as budget and accounting, human resources, communications and development.
• Supervises Veterinary technician(s)
• Recommends, plans and monitors long-term department goals and policies
• Team with others to make colony management decisions
• May lead educational programs
• Supervise volunteers and visiting medical personnel
• May assist in grant writing or other fund raising projects

Education and Experience Required:
• a Veterinary degree (DVM/VMD) from an AVMA-accredited school, a state license, the ability to be licensed in Louisiana
• Experience with nonhuman primates is highly preferred
• Board certification by ACLAM or ACZM, chimpanzee experience, management experience and knowledge of safety and biohazard procedures and animal care regulations are desired.

Work Hours: 
• 8 AM – 5 PM,  Monday thru Friday; some nights, weekends, and holidays

3. Network Administrator

Primary Function:

·        Provide support and management for computer and communication systems.

 Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical assistance to computer system users, including the use of hardware and software.
  • Maintain security of network and computer systems following approved methods.
  • Ability to monitor firewalls
  • Install new software.
  • Monitor access control system, gate software and logs.
  • Test computer hardware, network software and operating system software.
  • Diagnose problems, recommend solutions and replace defective components.
  • May maintain animal records and other databases, including data entry and report generation.
  • Maintenance of computer networks and related computing environments, including computer hardware, systems software, applications software, and all configurations.
  • Perform routine network startup and shutdown procedures and maintain control records.
  • Testing computer hardware, network software and operating system software.
  • Set up equipment for employee use, performing and ensuring proper installation of cable, operating systems and appropriate software.
  • Train employees on software or hardware.
  • Perform other duties as required.

4. Development Director

Primary Function:Raise annual operating, special project, capital and endowment funds as required by the organizational strategic plan.  Provide overall management of the development program.  Report to President. Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement all aspects of fundraising programs.
  • Plan and direct organization’s annual fundraising policies and capital development initiatives.
  • Generate goals and strategies to achieve goals in line with Board of Directors.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with donors
  • Maintain oversight of donation tracking and management of donor database
  • Identify new donor bases and develop initiatives to solicit funds.
  • Research new fundraising methods and evaluate feasibility of new fundraising programs.
  • Hire, train and supervise development staff.
  • Write communications for donors through appeals, newsletters, publications, website and email alerts. 
  • Target, write and submit proposals to foundations and corporations.
  • Develop major gift opportunities.
  • Staff volunteer fundraising committee and interact with other appropriate committees.
  • Coordinate activities with other departments.
  • Recommend and manage the development budget.
  • Gauge progress toward goals with monthly and annual reporting.
  • Develop and evaluate long-term departmental objectives.

 Supervision and Responsibility:
  • Manages all aspects of departmental staff.  Trains and supervises volunteers.
  • Reports to top management. 
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in a variety of the field’s concepts, practices and procedures.  Performs a variety of complicated tasks.

  • Recommends plans and monitors long-term department objectives and policies. 
  • Creativity, independent thinking and latitude are required.
 Education and Experience Required:Bachelor’s degree in related field required. Advanced degree preferred. Fifteen years work experience in nonprofit fundraising required.  A combination of 20 years advanced degree and experience can be substituted for the education/experience requirement.  Eight years experience managing a fundraising program and staff required.

5. Enrichment Technician

Primary Function: Assist the Behaviorist with the behavioral, training, and enrichment care of a large colony of chimpanzees retired from medical research.   

  • Duties and Responsibilities:

    ·               Provide enrichment and training to large colony of chimpanzees.
    ·               Monitor progress of social group formations. 
    ·               Order enrichment supplies. 
    ·               Maintain two (2) enrichment kitchens.
    ·               Construct and provide enrichment devices. 
    ·               Provide scheduled enrichment to chimpanzees. 
    ·               Plan monthly enrichment calendars according to program goals and with Sr. Staff approval.
    ·               Distribute enrichment for other staff members when appropriate.
    ·               Monitor progress of social groups and individual chimpanzees.
    ·               Train chimpanzees for cooperation and enrichment. 
    ·               Assist Behaviorist with data collection, reports and publication generation. 
    ·               Assist with behavioral observation studies. 
    ·               Assist in training staff members to use positive reinforcement techniques with chimpanzees.
    ·               Monitor response of chimpanzees to enrichment, report and recommend needed adjustments.
    ·               Work with volunteers to further goals of the enrichment program.
    ·               Duties will include use of power tools.
    ·        Other duties as required. 

Education:

  • Four years experience with non human primates or other exotic species is required.  Two years experience implementing environmental enrichment programs, positive reinforcement training and computer experience are required.
  • A Bachelors degree from an accredited college in a related field and two years experience providing nonhuman primates with enrichment or training may be substituted for the education/experience required.  Behavioral observation and data collection and summarization experience preferred.
  • Organizational skills, such as planning an enrichment calendar, maintaining kitchens and supplies, and scheduling others for training sessions are also preferred. 
  • Must have the ability to work in a team environment and speak to the public, staff, and classroom groups. 

Supervision and Responsibilities:  None; reports to Behavior Program Manager.  

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:   Must be able to routinely lift and carry 50 pounds for short distances; 75 pounds if carrying nonhuman primates.  (Lifting includes feed, chemicals, animals, and hoses, etc.)  This work will required bending, carrying, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reading, squatting, standing stooping, writing, and watching.  Duties will involve driving company vehicles, which required a valid drivers license and a good driving record.    

ENVIRONMENT/WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work may involve considerable outdoor work in various weather conditions.
  • Potential exists for animal bites and animal scratches
  • Potential exposure to unpleasant odors, animal wastes, animal tissue and animal body fluids.

1. Chimpanzee Care Giver Internship Announcement

Position Available:  Animal Care - Husbandry Internship

Internship Description:  Chimp Haven, Inc. will provide a unique opportunity for three individuals interested in the behavioral or biological sciences to learn and participate in the care of captive chimpanzees in a sanctuary environment. This internship is designed for those individuals wishing to gain experience working with chimpanzees and will focus on their basic needs such as diet, sanitation, socialization, enrichment, and security. Through the experience, interns will gain knowledge of chimpanzee behavior and animal care.
 
Qualifications/Experience:  Please send transcripts (for students), two letters of recommendation and a cover letter which details your interests. All internships will be competitive. Both undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply. A general understanding and concern for the well being of animals is required. Coursework in primatology, biology, or animal behavior is preferred but not required. Proof of a negative TB test and Tetanus vaccination is required.

Salary/funding: The internship is on a volunteer basis and provides no stipend. Housing may be available.  Personal vehicle is required.
